When sh*t hits the fan, you need a vehicle that will run when others won't

His father (a rocket scientist specializing in electronics) was on the team responsible for designing a system capable of shooting down ICBMs coming from Russia. He explained Carrington Events to Nick, and that governments had figured out how to recreate them to use as a weapon.
Flash forward 50 years, we find ourselves in a time where manufactures have made vehicles ever more vulnerable to to sensitive electronics.
In a recent two week period, a tow truck driver reported every vehicle he towed (up to 12 a day) had been made in the last 2 1/2 years! Every one had a computer or electronic sensor fail.

A much greater threat, EMPs (ElectroMagnetic Pulse), can come from our Sun. In 1989 a glancing blow moved satellites out of their orbits, took out communications in USA's North East, and caused a blackout across 20% of Canada.
Government's military and police are using EMP devices to disable cars of perceived threats. EMP devices can be made by anyone with the skill and desire to do so for localized use. Its just a matter of time before carjackers and others catch on.
The newest vehicles cannot be made safe from EMPs. However older cars (with a great deal of work and protective shielding) can be made to survive EMPs whether from our sun, malicious governments or bad actors.

Older classic cars can be completely restored to "new" condition with the added benefit of shielding for all wiring and electrical components (known as a "Faraday Cage" or shield).
The costs for such a complete restoration and electronics protection retrofit, start in the $250,000.00 to $350,000.00 area and go up depending on the model vehicle you choose and availability of new replacement parts for that vehicle.
Microchips are easily fried by EMPs
The intricate wiring and microprocessors used in Airbag technology cannot be made safe from EMPs. To depend on airbags during or after an EMP is to risk your life.
A better solution is to use a multi point seat belt solution. Race car drivers use a five point system with no airbags and walk away from much worse crashes than you or I are likely to encounter. Strapping yourself and loved ones firmly in a well fastened seat allows the car to crumple, not your face or body.
The 1859 "Carrington Event" started fires in telegraph offices around the world. Voltages of up to 1000 were measured briefly in places. It is estimated if this solar flair hit the world now it would create the greatest natural disaster mankind has known in recorded history. The much milder event in 1989 blew out the electrical grid in Quebec destroying so many transformers it created a world wide shortage that took years to replace. Thank god that was a glancing blow to our earth. Scientists tell us with certainty there have been events in our history that were 10 to 20 times more powerful than the 1859 event. in 2012 earth missed an event by just nine days that according to NASA was big enough to "Knock civilization back to the 18th century"... if your keeping track, that was before the invention of electricity... translation... every electric device would have been made useless. Communication would return to flags and smoke signals. Any generator not shielded would be useless. The wiring in your house would act like an antenna and direct overwhelmingly high voltage to every electric component in your home. The US military has some vehicles that are protected and would still work. Our mission is to build vehicles that will also be among the survivors.
The only proven way to protect a Vehicle is with a Faraday Cage (or shielding). No modern car with onboard computers can be reliably protected by any means.
There are many devices sold to just be wired into you vehicle, these should not be trusted. The vehicle must be redesigned and all wiring must be removed and re-run with shielding. If any portion of the wiring is missed it will act like an antenna directing the pulse into the entire vehicles system. For example the vehicle may not have a radio antenna, even the switch and wiring that turns on the dome light must be shielded.
Many modern door switches have computer chips in them and are made with plastic. It is impossible to protect such a switch. Government testing showed wiring to the rear directional signals and stop lights were a major gateway for an EMP into the vehicles electrical system. If any wire is missed and not shielded correctly the vehicle cannot be depended on to survive an event.
Governments have EMP devices as small as a suitcase for mobile use. If in the wrong hands they cannot be detected until used.
